Stagma. 1681 -1820. Stagma refers to any distilled liquor. Though I have no evidence of this, I can only presume that the origin of ‘stagma’ is derived from the word ‘stagometer’. A stagometer was an apparatus for the measurement of the number of drops per unit of volume of a liquid; something that drips. To make distilled liquor, vaporised alcohol is cooled or condensed, to form clear drops of distilled spirits. Voila, the result is stagma.
