70s

The seventies were said to be a time of great transition, bringing about monumental changes in civil rights, politics, fashion and music. It’s true.  There was a prominent rise of women in government worldwide. The US Supreme Court ruled desegregation constitutional.  NASA and the Soviets sent probes to Mars.  Greenpeace was founded, as well as Nasdaq.  And the microprocessor was introduced.  Disco (nothing else need be said about that).  Of course, there were also great oil and energy crises. The Cold War continued to wage on.  Smoking and drinking was practically a requirement, especially while pregnant. Polyester was the prescribed uniform, and coupled with such prolific smoking (and drinking), considering how flammable the material is, it’s amazing that there weren’t more accidental self caused spontaneous combustions.  In the 70s notable inventions included the Bic disposable lighter (it was more economical and convenient, having to light all those copious amounts of cigarettes every where we went), the VCR, post-it notes, liposuction and the Walkman.  Oh, and the microwave, otherwise known as a ‘science oven’ by those who have seen the film American Hustle, was also popularized for home use in the 70s. The emerging trend, it would seem, was disposability, portability and convenience. Oh, 70s, you were the mother who gave birth to our quick-fix-youth-obsessed-attention-deficit-addled-throw-away culture of today. Though we may have forgotten how far forward you did bring us in the twentieth century, we will never forget the music you left us with.  Here are a few of my favourites:
