On February 25, 1751, in New York City, those who could afford to part with a penny witnessed the first ever performing [case of animal exploitation featuring a] monkey exhibit in America.  The act showcased a two-foot tall monkey who walked a tightrope and danced for delighted onlookers.  One would think that curiosities as such would have ceased to entertain us at some point in history, but practices involving performing animals in human captivity continue on in these so called modern times.
