Much as the title suggests, Les Revenants en francais, or The Returned in English, is a television series set in a small mountain town, where the dead reappear. It is French, so, yes-it-is-subtitled-but-you-shouldn’t-let-a-little-reading-limit-you-as-you-are-missing-out-on-some-really-great-quality-European-dramatic-television. The dead ‘return’ very much alive, including a road accident victim, a small boy who was murdered by burglars and a serial killer. They attempt to resume their lives while strange phenomena befalls the town, including recurring power outages, the water level of the reservoir mysteriously lowering to reveal the presence of dead animals and a church steeple, as well as strange marks appearing on the bodies of both the living and the dead. Like AMC’s The Walking Dead, you don’t have to be a zombie kind of sort to enjoy The Returned. And, though it is dark and surreal, the dead in The Returned are not out to kill or eat anyone, but rather question their very understanding of life and death while they strive to put their lives back together. If you are looking for some binge television to keep you inside, warm and eerie-I-mean-toasty, during this winter-that-never-ends, you can find the series’ complete Season 1 on Netflix and iTunes. Season 2 is set to air in 2014.
